For the husband and wife team, Chloe and Valentin, making wooden toys takes them back to their childhood. Embracing the unique character of handcrafted products and the quality of long-lasting materials, they create simple little wonders, designed to accompany your kids on their colourful adventures for years. Uniqueness and quality are important to them, and the pair loves creating products to spark imagination and play.
Chloe and Valentin first met while studying Art at the Beaux-Arts University, in Annecy, France. After travelling the world together, they fell in love with the Canadian coastline. With an abundance of scenic inspiration and a healthy supply of local wood, the community of Powell River was the perfect place to start their little wooden toy and costume business.
SINCE 2014 the business has steadily grown, and a once small company has become an established studio dedicated to introducing classic and timeless designs to a new generation of imaginative kids.
At Woodpeckers Toys, Chloe and Valentine produce their toys as a 2 person team. All the toys are made in their Powell River studio. Half of the space is dedicated to woodworking and the other half is the fabric workshop.
Each wooden toy is designed and handcrafted with care. Woodpeckers Toys is committed to using locally harvested or sustainable wood. They turn it into sailboats, swords, shields and classic games using many different power tools, but value the unique touch that hand tools can bring to the toys. After a final thorough hand sanding, all toys are coated with a durable all-natural, eco-friendly and food-safe wax/oil mixture.
Using Canadian sourced felt and fabric, they design and create all kinds of fun costumes and cute nursery decor. Experimenting until they find the perfect design, they then create a template and start making a small series. As always, the goal is to provide children with fun quality toys that will last.
